Anyone who shares a home with a cat or a dog knows how much time they spend curled up asleep. That makes a pet bed one of the most used pieces in the whole house, which is exactly why we felt it deserved the same care and quality we put into everything else we make. Here is what to look for in a genuinely sustainable pet bed, and why we chose felted wool for ours.
A sustainable pet bed starts with natural, renewable materials rather than synthetic foam and plastic mesh, which shed microplastics over time and eventually end up in landfill once they wear out. It should also be built to last years rather than months, since a bed that needs replacing every season creates far more waste than one built properly the first time. Finally, it should come from a supply chain you can actually trace, made by people paid fairly for genuinely skilled work.
Our pet caves are handcrafted from one hundred percent New Zealand wool, felted entirely by hand with no synthetic fillers or bonding agents. Wool is naturally breathable, helping regulate temperature so pets stay comfortable whether they are napping in a warm room or a cooler hallway. It is also naturally resistant to odour and dirt, which matters enormously in a bed that gets used every single day.
Because felted wool is dense and matted rather than woven, a pet cave keeps its structure far longer than a stuffed or foam filled bed. It will not flatten out or lose its shape the way cheaper beds do after a few months of enthusiastic use.
